The Provide First Aid in an Education & Care Setting course provides the participant with the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in an education & care setting.
Participants may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations‚ including community and workplace settings. This course will provide participants with the ability to recognise basic signs and symptoms of various illnesses and injury and subsequent provision of appropriate treatment or assistance. The course focus includes CPR‚ treatment of common medical conditions and situation recognition and management.

This course requires practical application of Resuscitation that will require kneeling on the floor and a range of practical scenarios with candidates on the floor. Candidates need to successfully complete the practical components under the award conditions in order to achieve a Statement of Attainment.

This course offers nationally recognised certification and participants upon successful completed will obtain a Statement of Attainment with the following Units of Competence:
• HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

Course: Aqua Exercise Instructor

Aqua exercise instructors are tasked with leading aquatic fitness classes at aquatic facilities. They design and deliver engaging workouts tailored to participants’ fitness levels and goals, emphasising water-based exercises for strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. 

Instructors ensure the safety of participants during sessions, provide guidance on proper form and technique, and may also assist with program development and participant management. They may be called on to assist in rescue and first aid.

The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Course provides the minimum requirements for those persons wishing to become a learn to swim instructor (for ages 4 ). After completion of the course and your industry onboarding you will have the opportunity to apply for a RLSSQ Swim Teacher Licence as outlined in the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO). The Swim Teacher Licensee Handbook will be provided to candidates during the face to face component of the course and outlines the process to obtain a license. The information provided here will assist you in deciding if the course selected is the right course for you.

It is assumed that participants are sufficiently physically fit and healthy to undertake this course. The following physical activities will occur during the course unless you advise of any physical difficulties or limitations: kneeling‚ bending over‚ crouching‚ standing‚ leaning‚ sitting, pushing, lifting weights, swimming long distances, towing, diving, carrying and other physical activity.

This course is an extension course for Swim Teachers looking to gain specialist knowledge in teaching infants and toddlers in the pool.

This course will deliver the skills and knowledge required to select an appropriate progression of activities for the development of infants and toddlers over six (6) months of age in an aquatic environment.

It applies to those conducting learn-to-swim and water safety classes in swimming pools and confined natural shallow water venues. This course will ensure that work is performed according to relevant legislation including working with children and/or vulnerable people checks, organisational policies and procedures and best practice principles of aquatic activities.

Candidates attending this course should hold a current swimming and water safety teacher (or equivalent such as RLSS, AUSTSWIM or ASCTA) prior to attending.

It is assumed that participants are sufficiently physically fit and healthy to undertake this course. The following physical activities will occur during the course unless you advise of any physical difficulties or limitations: kneeling, bending over, crouching, standing, leaning, sitting, pushing, lifting weights, swimming long distances, towing, diving, carrying and other physical activity.

Royal Life Saving’s Aquatic Technical Operations course (previously know as Pool Plant Operations) provide the knowledge and skills to safely manage water quality and pool plant operations from the largest aquatic facility through to a single pool at a campground or motel, or even your own backyard pool.

This is a unique skill set that is vital for the safe and successful operation of any organisation or facility that provides access to a swimming pool. The course focus includes monitoring and maintaining pool water quality, operating plant/equipment, risk management and developing maintenance programs and step by step procedures. Pre-requisite: There are no pre-requisites for this course, although some experience with pool plant equipment or operation is strongly recommended

• The Bronze Cross further develops the skills and knowledge gained in the Bronze Medallion, with a greater emphasis on rescue techniques in deeper water and more challenging conditions. 

• Candidates must hold or have previously held the Bronze Medallion or a higher award, according to the Wikipedia article on lifesaving awards. 

• It involves both theoretical and practical components, including demonstrations of rescue skills, resuscitation techniques, and responding to simulated emergency scenarios, says the Lifesaving Society. 

• The practical assessment includes demonstrating a head-first and foot-first surface dive, swimming underwater, and performing rescues in different scenarios, including those involving a second rescuer. 

• The Bronze Cross aims to equip individuals with the skills and confidence to participate in aquatic activities safely and effectively, while also providing a pathway for further development in lifesaving and emergency care.

The safety and wellbeing of children should sit at the heart of any organisation’s values. However, this does not mean that the development and implementation of child safe practices is always as good as it needs to be or that improvements can not be made.  

Further to this, ensuring children’s’ safety in an aquatic industry context can present a range of additional and specialised challenges. This is why Royal Life Saving has developed two online child safety modules; one targeted at frontline workers and the other targeted at management level staff.

The chief purpose of the modules is to assist the aquatic industry, and it’s workforce, to develop a clear understanding of the expectations, legal requirements and best practices relating to child safety.

Communication Skills
It's quite simple, effective communication is the lifeblood of any organisation! How all levels of staff communicate with each other and how they communicate with your patrons and external stakeholders shapes the daily operations and overall success of any business.  This online module aims to take this key skill to a higher level; to give your staff the knowledge, skills and techniques to communicate more effectively. 

Like many of the professional development products on offer through Royal Life Saving the communication skills module has been written in response to feedback from the aquatic industry and with aquatic industry employees firmly in mind.  The module should take around 30 minutes to complete and is broken down into four main learning themes:

• Why communication is important
• What good communication involves
• Types of communication within an organisation
• Communication scenarios

Each of these themes is explored in detail through a range of stories or scenarios relayed through characters in typical aquatic industry roles: swim teacher, swim school coordinator, customer service officer/manager, lifeguard, lifeguard duty manager, facility manager. The characters and scenarios are used to explore key concepts that will lead to a better understanding of communication.  They are also used to demonstrate strategies and techniques, in authentic settings, that outline how to adjust your communication techniques, how to communicate effectively in a range of situations, and what can be achieved when these strategies are used well.

Conflict in the workplace can be highly damaging at an individual and organisational level.  It’s negative impacts should not be underestimated, however, it also presents an opportunity for individuals and organisations to develop and strengthen their business and the relationships that support it.
 
Like many of the professional development products on offer through Royal Life Saving the conflict management course has been written in response to feedback from the aquatic industry and with aquatic industry employees firmly in mind.  The course is broken down into four main learning themes:

• Understanding conflict
• Identifying conflict
• Personality types and conflict
• How to manage conflict situations

Each of these themes is explored through several animated scenarios created in familiar aquatic industry settings. Each scenario examines various pathways of a conflict situation depending on the actions and responses of participants to help guide them through the key steps and strategies for managing conflict and support them to understand their reactions and behaviours and the potential outcomes.
 
The course should take roughly 90 minutes to complete. The course training asks participants to reflect, discuss and then apply the knowledge and skills gained from the online course to a range of realistic scenarios that employees in the aquatic industry face.

The Cultural Competence Program is directly aimed for staff working in the aquatic and community recreation sector. It is designed to enable workers to gain a better, broader and deeper understanding of the needs of communities from other countries when it comes to attending an aquatic facility, accessing a public swimming pool and being involved in a formal swimming program.

For many people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, these seemingly simple interactions can  be daunting.  Preparedness of the aquatic sector will help deliver a positive experience at the pool…one which results in a fun, friendly and safe experience.

Completing the program will ensure aquatic sector staff gain practical skills and cultural specific knowledge that they can apply at the workplace and in everyday life.

On top of this, being a Culturally Qualified Centre can assist your Aquatic Centre to attract new markets as well as meet growing governance and community service obligations.

Much of the Cultural and Linguistic Diverse (CaLD) community has had limited access and involvement to pools and swimming programs, so it is imperative for the aquatic industry to gain cultural competence to assist in easing all cultures into a fun, friendly and safe experience around water. 

The Cultural Competency course is geared toward developing understanding in culture, diversity, and inclusion through: 

• Meanings and definitions
• Ways that cultural diversity contributes to competitive advantage
• Unconscious bias in decision making and how to remedy it

Fatigue Management

Self-care during and after a shift is very important. Fatigue management assists you to know and look for warning signs, have an understanding of the body systems and the various effects of fatigue.

Determining all the factors that cause fatigue can be difficult.  

The Swim Teaching for Participants on the Autism Spectrum Professional Development module is designed for swim teachers that are starting out in this area of specialised teaching, or those with experience looking to test and update their knowledge and skills.  The combination of knowledge building and practical tips and strategies will give teachers the ability to move forward with confidence and clarity and deliver highly effective and enjoyable lessons in this rewarding but sometimes challenging area.
 
The module should take about 75 minutes to complete and covers the following topics:
 

• Understanding what autism is, and what it isn’t
• Identifying the strengths, interests, characteristics and behaviours of people on the spectrum and better understanding how they may think and learn
• Understanding the relationship between autism, water, swimming and drowning prevention
• Preparing lessons or programs tailored to individual participants on the spectrum
• Preparing for and managing behaviours you may experience when teaching swimming to participants on the spectrum
• Utilising a range of strategies and techniques during lesson delivery

 The module includes interviews with children on the spectrum that are learning to swim, their parents or carers and their swim teachers, along with footage of swim lessons in action. All of this is designed to help bring to life key messages and enable you to engage with the subject matter and take it with you as you continue your teaching journey.

The Teacher of Lifesaving is an online professional development course that covers the fundamentals of providing engaging, effective and safe teaching in a lifesaving context.

It is designed to upskill current swimming and water safety teachers or physical education teachers by providing the context, technique and teaching strategies for a range of lifesaving skills, including personal survival, rescue and resuscitation.

The course acknowledges that teachers have varying degrees of prior knowledge and skills and seeks to build on this expertise. It asks teachers to reflect on the context and theory that underpins skills, address gaps to improve learner outcomes and overall program quality, and reflect on their personal teaching practices.

A range of learning activities are used to provide an interactive and educational experience, including video, hypotheticals, knowledge prompts, true/false, drag and drop, click and reveal tiles, and scenarios.

The Lifeguard Advanced Supervision Skills module is designed for Lifeguards with a degree of experience that are looking to evaluate and extend their current knowledge and skills around supervision and scanning and better understand the visual, cognitive and physical challenges they face when supervising an aquatic environment. The module is based on the premise that when these challenges are properly understood, they can then be more effectively addressed. 
 
This module will:
 

• ask Lifeguards to reflect on their knowledge, skills and training so far
• ask Lifeguards to analyse their experiences supervising a pool and the internal and external challenges they have faced
• define these challenges, familiar and unfamiliar, and explain why they exist
• provide a range of strategies and solutions to overcome these challenges and outline a range of best practice techniques; some of which should be known to Lifeguards and others which will be new and can be added to their skill set.

 
The module is highly visual and includes a range of animated and image-based video presentations, along with visual exercises to complete and regular knowledge prompts and checks.  Recommended learning time is approximately 40 minutes and in order to receive a completion certificate participants need to complete the knowledge checks at the end of each topic.

The Supervision Planning module is designed for staff tasked with developing and implementing the lifeguard supervision plan at an aquatic facility. While targeted at Facility Managers and Duty Managers, anyone interested in knowing more about the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO), the supervision planning process and how to best lead a lifeguard team will also benefit greatly from completing the module.  The content in the module is based on the Aquatic Supervision Planning guidelines within the GSPO. It presents this information in a practical, easy-to-understand format designed to enable participants to connect and apply the information to their day-to-day work context.  
 
This module will:

• ask participants to reflect on their current knowledge, skills and experience developing and implementing supervision plans
• enable participants to better understand, interpret and apply the information contained within the aquatic supervision planning guidelines in the GSPO.
• develop participants’ understanding of the risk management processes in the context of aquatic supervision
• step participants through the process of developing a supervision system and supervision plan; highlighting key items for consideration in the planning and ongoing management process
• facilitate a deeper understanding of the requirements and challenges of working with lifeguards and fulfilling lifeguard supervisory and management roles.

 
The module is highly visual and interactive and includes a range of activities and exercises to complete in the process of developing and adapting key elements of a supervision plan in response to changing conditions.  Recommended learning time is approximately 50 minutes and to receive a completion certificate participants need to complete the interactive exercises and knowledge checks.

Micro-credential: AI enhanced drowning detection system

The Training in Drowning Detection Systems module is designed for aquatic facility staff working with, or preparing to implement, drowning detection systems (DDS), including those powered by artificial intelligence. While targeted at Facility Managers, Duty Managers and Lifeguards, anyone seeking to understand the role of DDS in aquatic supervision and emergency response will benefit from completing this module.
The module provides practical guidance on the safe and effective use of DDS in aquatic facilities, including key planning, implementation and compliance considerations. Content is presented in an engaging and accessible format, using real-world scenarios, podcast-style interviews and immersive and interactive media to support understanding and application in the day-to-day work context.
This module will:

• enable participants to understand how DDS can support supervision, communication and emergency response
• step participants through the planning and preparation required for DDS implementation
• develop awareness of key privacy, legal and compliance requirements
• help participants explore how to safely integrate DDS into supervision systems and emergency response procedures

The module is highly visual and interactive, with a focus on practical application. Recommended learning time is approximately 70 minutes, and participants must complete the interactive exercises and knowledge assessments at the end of each topic to receive a Royal Life Saving Queensland micro-credential (digital badge):  Training in Drowning Detection Systems.
