School Pathways Program

The Royal Life Saving School Pathway Program is a water safety, lifesaving and first aid skills program for high school students aiming to provide the skills and knowledge for first aid, staying safe in and around the water or offering assistance in a rescue.

The School Pathway Program recognises that students who participate in this program will gain skills and knowledge that may impact on their behaviours in aquatic locations and be able to render assistance in an emergency. It endeavours to teach participants a range of personal survival techniques and provide them with skills to deal with an emergency situation.

The School Pathway Program are the following courses:

  • CPR
  • First Aid
  • Bronze Medallion

This particular course includes First Aid (incl. CPR)  and Bronze Medallion and is partial completion of the VET course The Bronze Medallion (refer Course Outline here) AND First Aid (refer Course Outline here). Student are able to upgrade the course to a VET certificate or Statement of Attainment.

School Pathway Program Upgrade (to a VET Certificate or Statement of Attainment)

The School Pathway Program Upgrade allows students completing the Student Pathway Program to achieve Units of Competency in their chosen courses; CPR, First Aid and/or Bronze Medallion. These units can help students gain employment or progress towards VET Certificates such as the Certificate III in Aquatic and Community Recreation.

The upgrade can be arranged by contacting Royal Life Saving and arranging a face-to-face  assessment day with a Royal Life Saving approved trainer and assessor.


Units of Competency:
These courses are not nationally accredited training, no units of competence will be issued.

Level of English: A reasonable level of English is required to be able to complete this course successfully

Introduction:

The information provided here will assist you in deciding if the course selected is the right course for you.
 
It is assumed that participants are sufficiently physically fit and healthy to undertake this course. The following physical activities will occur during the course unless you advise of any physical difficulties or limitations: kneeling‚ bending over‚ crouching‚ standing‚ leaning‚ sitting‚ pushing‚ lifting weights, swimming long distances, towing, diving, carrying and other physical activity. 


The specific requirements required for successful completion of the Bronze Medallion are:
  • Performing 2 minutes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on an adult manikin on the ground
  • Swimming 400m in under 13 minutes: 100m breaststroke, 100m survival backstroke (underwater arm recovery), 100m sidestroke and 100m freestyle
  • 100m timed tow in under 3 minutes 15: 50m swim (any recognisable stroke), 50m tow of an unconscious casualty

Participants will require the following for the face-to-face component:
  • Photo Identification (i.e. Drivers Licence)
  • Your Unique Student Identifier (www.usi.gov.au)
  • Your Swimming & Lifesaving Manual
  • Appropriate clothing‚ sunscreen‚ bathers and towel
  • Any drinks‚ meals and/or snacks you may need

Pre-Course: Participants are required to complete a pre-course workbook before the face-to-face component. Your Trainer will provide you with the information to successfully complete your pre-course workbook.

Face-to-Face: Participants are required to attend the face-to-face component‚ The face to face course includes theory and practical assessments..
